Facilitating the use of groundbreaking Creative Arts Therapies for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities in our community, the Creative Arts Therapies Program harnesses the transformative power of the arts to promote healing and well-being. By employing an integrative approach, this program weaves together music, writing, visual arts, and community arts components, creating a multifaceted platform for therapeutic engagement.
Music Therapy: Through music therapy, participants engage in activities such as playing instruments, singing, and listening to music. These sessions are designed to stimulate cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional regulation. The rhythmic and melodic elements of music have a profound impact on neurological processes, making music therapy an effective tool for emotional expression and connection. Writing Therapy: Writing therapy encourages participants to express their thoughts and feelings through the written word. This modality provides a safe space for reflection and storytelling, allowing individuals to process their experiences and find meaning in their narratives. Whether through journaling, poetry, or creative writing exercises, writing therapy fosters self-awareness and emotional healing. Visual Arts Therapy: Visual arts therapy involves the creation of art as a means of expression and communication. Participants use various mediums such as painting, drawing, and sculpture to convey emotions and experiences that might be difficult to articulate verbally. This form of therapy enhances cognitive abilities, boosts self-esteem, and provides a sense of accomplishment. Community Arts: The community arts component brings people together to create collaborative art projects, fostering a sense of belonging and social cohesion. These projects often involve public art installations, community murals, and group performances, which not only beautify shared spaces but also strengthen community bonds. By participating in communal artistic endeavors, individuals experience the joy of collective creativity and shared purpose. |

Due to the success of the program, SAACA has expanded our efforts into Assisted Living Facilities, Retirement Communities, Hospitals and Rehabilitation Center settings to work directly with individuals who are coping with temporary and permanent disabilities related to post-traumatic stress syndrome, memory care, depression and anxiety, aging and life transition support, rehabilitation and brain trauma injuries as well as quality of life enhancement.
Creative aging programs are designed to enrich the lives of older adults through diverse and engaging artistic activities that promote lifelong learning, emotional well-being, and social connection. These programs are tailored to cater to the interests, abilities, and needs of seniors, ensuring that they can continue to explore their creativity and enjoy the numerous benefits of artistic expression. |
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) has assembled a community-wide Arts Care Package Campaign to provide assisted living communities and hospital patients with a diverse array of creative experiences including music, craft kits, journaling and DIY arts projects, all designed for residents to enjoy from the comfort of their own rooms.
The individually wrapped and sanitized packages were all assembled from an overwhelming response of donations from local artists, makers and musicians, as well as SAACA partner Bookman’s Entertainment Exchange. The program was envisioned to provide much needed support during the COVID-19 pandemic, as a response to the timely need of our most vulnerable populations during a time of isolation. |
A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT MUSIC THERAPY & PTSD
In association with the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, "Let It Ring" is a documentary collaboration between a number of organizations across the country including Warrior Songs, Guitars for Vets, Flutes for Vets and many more who helped bring this story to light. The project, written and directed by David Seeber, is a short documentary about the profound and powerful impact that music therapy can have on veterans struggling with PTSD. This intimate film brings together the personal stories of veterans and organizations that are working hand in hand to bring the gift of music to those who need it most. SAACA is proud to be featured in the documentary and will be supporting the 2020 release with featured viewings and discussions with the director at CATALYST Arts & Maker Space. |

In 2015, the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance partnered with MUSIC & MEMORY℠, to bring this life changing program to Southern Arizona.
SAACA administers the program in local memory care facilities in the region. The approach is simple, elegant and effective: Set up personalized music playlists for those in memory care programs and residences and download the selections on iPods or other digital devices. When played, these musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and can bring participants back to life, enabling them to feel like themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present. |

At SAACA, we witness the transformative power of the arts every day in our community. Our creative aging approach is particularly impactful, as it leverages the arts to enhance the lives of individuals of all ages, particularly seniors. Creative aging is about more than engaging in artistic activities; it’s about fostering an environment where older adults can continue to learn, grow, and express themselves. This philosophy acknowledges that creativity is ageless and that the arts play a vital role in maintaining mental, emotional, and physical health. Through our partnerships with local retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and independent senior living centers, we bring high-quality arts instruction and classes directly to where seniors live.
These partnerships ensure that seniors have consistent access to enriching arts experiences that cater to their interests and abilities, promoting lifelong learning and enhancing their quality of life. |
Through a unique partnership with the Veterans Administration of Southern Arizona and the Arizona State Veterans Home, each year SAACA provides the opportunity for over 5,000 Veterans to become involved in the arts by presenting free onsite programs such as:
