Arizona Artists Set to Bring New Public Art to Sahuarita, AZ as part of Town's25th Anniversary9/10/2019
The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA), in collaboration with the Town of Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Department are bringing a variety of new public art installations to town parks, in honor of the town’s 25th Anniversary. These temporary public art pieces will be painted on five different electrical boxes in order to enhance the visual landscape and quality of life for residents and visitors to Sahuarita Parks. The murals are expected to be completed by November 2019.
The new murals celebrate themes of Sahuarita culture, economy, and landscape. Three southern Arizona artists – Ignacio Garcia, Wesley Fawcett Creigh and Ghazal Ghazi - were chosen from a competitive field of applicants to design and implement the murals. This Public Art Installation is one of many upcoming community events including a Chalk Art Festival on November 2 at Sahuarita Lake Park set to debut in the town thanks to an exciting new partnership between the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance and the Town of Sahuarita. From public art installations to community art festivals to culinary and music celebrations, the partnership will bring the arts center stage throughout Sahuarita. SAACA murals will be featured at the following locations in Sahuarita: Anamax Park 17501 S. Camino De Las Quintas Sahuarita, AZ 85629 Quail Creek-Veterans Municipal Park 1905 N. Old Nogales Highway Sahuarita, AZ 85629 Ghazal Ghazi October 2 — 4 (First week of October) Artist Ghazal Ghazi will paint two murals connecting cosmos, the Sahuarita people, and local ecology. Ghazi’s mural in Anamax Park will feature a stunning portrait surrounded by a dreamy starscape on one side, and imagery inspired by the community garden on the other. At North Santa Cruz Park, Ghazi will paint a prickly pear inspired mural. Ghazi is a multidisciplinary visual and literary artist who works with the intention of promoting community and dialogue. She has created large scale 2D and 3D works of public art and exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, from Mexico, to Chile to Oklahoma, exploring themes of sustainability, memory, language, community, healing, and ecology. Wesley Fawcett Creigh October 14 — 18 (Third week of October) Two murals by public artist Wesley Fawcett Creigh will be going up in Anamax Park in early October. Creigh’s murals will pay tribute to two key aspects of Sahuarita’s local economy and offerings: the Whipple observatory, located just south of town, and the pecan orchards. A graduate of Prescott College with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Art with an Emphasis on Social Impact, Creigh’s artistic resume includes public works created in partnership with many notable community organizations including the Santa Fe Art Institute, Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona, Springboard for the Arts, Pima Community College, and the Center for Global Justice. Creigh has been featured in galleries throughout Arizona, Mexico, and Minnesota and is, in addition to being an accomplished muralist, an in-demand scenic designer for Arizona theaters. Ignacio Garcia October 28 – 31 (Last week of October) In late October, Ignacio Garcia will paint a large Saguaro flower mural on the electrical boxes at Quail Creek - Veterans Municipal. Taking inspiration from Sahuarita’s namesake (roughly translating to “little Saguaro”), there will be nothing little about his eye-catching, realistic looking flowers. Garcia is well known throughout Arizona and California for his 3D chalk murals and large, colorful photo-realistic murals that often play on whimsical, playful pop art ideas. His mural of Bill Walton riding a Jackalope on the side of Rialto Theater in Tucson is one of the most photographed images of the downtown corridor. Garcia is an artistic studies graduate of the East Valley Institute of Technology in Mesa, AZ and the Gnoman Workshop in Hollywood, CA. SAACA enlists artists, businesses, governments, and individuals to expand artistic and cultural opportunities in their respective communities. To enhance access to the arts and to promote cultural awareness in the communities it serves, SAACA presents large-scale festivals, events and other programs. The Alliance also promotes educational opportunities in the arts and culture for all ages. Town of Sahuarita The Town of Sahuarita is the 6th youngest incorporated town in the State of Arizona, and will celebrate its 25th birthday on September 20, 2019. Sahuarita is a regional partner with other municipalities, educational institutions, non-profits, and business leaders in Southern Arizona, and recognizes the importance of arts and culture in creating and sustaining well-rounded communities. For more information on the public art partnership between the Town of Sahuarita and SAACA, please visit www.sahuaritaaz.gov/parks. Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, the Pima Association of Governments and Town of Oro Valley provide a unique opportunity for youth to earn income, mentorship and gain artistic experience. Teens from throughout Oro Valley are collaborating to create a large integrated public art installation with the goal of envisioning a healthy and vibrant Town, community and neighborhood. The project is funded by the Pima Association of Governments, who designed the program in 1995 with a goal to provide youth with an opportunity to be employed and participate in all phases of the design and installation of public artwork under the guidance of a professional artist. Additional program collaborators include the Town of Oro Valley Parks and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance.
The project will give teens an opportunity to design and produce artwork in a public transportation setting. The students, guided by selected artist administrators, will work for an eight-week period during summer break from school, May – July 2018. The new installation will be integrated into the entrance to the Oro Valley Community Center, located at 105555 N. La Cañada Drive. The students were challenged to brainstorm of ways they could incorporate themes of community discovery, community, multi-generational diversity, connectedness, wellness, engaged, active, and health. Two teaching artists were selected to help guide the students during the process. Under the direction and mentorship of artists, Hiro Tashima and Jason Butler, the 10-selected local high school students have designed and constructed a Public Art installation which was inspired by, and incorporated many of the structured themes. The artists and students will work in the materials of hand molded clay and mosaic, as well as welded steel and paint, as a basis for the art installation. The piece will create a unique identity for the Community Center entrance, tying together themes of multi-generational diversity, community connectedness, wellness, engagement, activity, health, public recreation, and transportation. “From our national awards to our 1% for Public Art Program, arts and culture are part of the fabric of Oro Valley,” said Mayor Satish I. Hiremath. “So the opportunity to engage our youth in the arts aligns with our community’s values. It is especially exciting to see this project unfold right here at the Oro Valley Community Center, where more than 500 patrons a day will get to enjoy this new installation.” The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, in partnership with the Town of Oro Valley and Pima Association of Governments (PAG), oversees the Summer Youth Art Project in Oro Valley. Under the direction and mentorship of selected Teaching Artist Supervisors, local high school and middle school students will design and construct some Public Art installation every three years at a transportation related site. Pima Association of Governments manages the Transportation Art by Youth program, which incorporates art into regional transportation projects. The program allows youth to acquire both artistic experience and develop a valuable work ethic. Established in 1995 the Transportation Art by Youth program provides opportunities to approximately 50 high school age students across the country. The students' concepts and techniques are aimed at humanizing the roadway system, enhancing urban gateway features, and helping define the unique identity of their respective communities. Major benefits of the program include both the quick and effective implementation time frame as well as the high visibility of resulting artwork along major transportation corridors. There also is a strong sense of community pride in the work efforts undertaken, coupled with a sense of accomplishment for the youth involved since the result of their artistic efforts will be appreciated and endured for many years to come. An unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony will be hosted for the new exhibition on Tuesday, July 31st at 10:30 AM at the Oro Valley Community Center entrance, located at 10555 North La Cañada Drive, Oro Valley, AZ 85737. All attendees should park in the Oro Valley Community Center parking lot. The ceremony will be held on the west side of the intersection. And you can help! This Giving Tuesday, SAACA raises funds to provide cameras for local Veterans participating in a therapeutic arts based photography program! Giving Tuesday is an international day of giving that allows for raising awareness for philanthropic benefactors -- specifically non-profits. Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance will participate in Giving Tuesday on November 28th this year to raise awareness as well as to dedicate funds to Veterans Creative Arts Therapy Programs.
This Giving Tuesday, for every $100 donated to SAACA, we will purchase one camera for a local Veteran receiving services in the PTSD Outpatient program at the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance who is participating in an artist based photography program at the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration. The Veterans Creative Arts Therapy Programs are facilitated through a unique partnership with the Veterans Administration of Southern Arizona and the Arizona State Veterans Home. Each year the programs benefit approximately 5,000 Veterns in the state. SAACA administers the free onsite programs that include: the Creative Arts Festival, a Veterans Day Celebration, Military Week Celebration, Musical and Visual Arts Therapy Programming, Live Music Performances and Veterans Community Gallery Projects. The Creative Arts Therapy Programs utilize an integrative method to provide healing through the arts using music, writing, visual arts and community arts components. The powerful impacts of the arts in improving quality of life are immeasurable and the relationship between the Creative Arts Therapy Programs and improved well-being among veterans are a growing area of interest in the medical field. Because participating in creative activities stimulates minds, lifts emotions, and often motivates the body, the arts are have become a vital complement to holistic approaches to treating a diversity of health issues. Research has found that actual artistic phenomena – from specific sounds to colors to light to movement – stimulate physiological and psychological healing. SAACA will use its Facebook page as the primary platform for outreach, as all fees are being waived for a full 24 hours on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Additionally, on Giving Tuesday, many organizations, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will be participating in fund-matching for contributions up to certain dollar amounts -- providing opportunities to maximize the power of giving. We hope you will consider donating to the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance this Giving Tuesday to support our efforts, and to help us integrate the healing power of the arts into our community.
