After getting a degree in jazz performance at ASU, pianist Chris Peña, has become a frequent collaborator in his hometown of Tucson sharing the stage frequently with locals cats such as Brice Winston, Jason Cardner, Mike Moynihan, Crystal Stark and Robin Bessier. Drummer Joshua Carruthers, born and raised in Bridgeport Connecticut, is a relative newcomer to the Tucson area. Back East, he was active on the gigging scene, playing throughout Connecticut and New York City in a variety of genres including jazz, experimental music, Rock/Pop, and modern R&B and Hip Hop. Rounding out the trio is the Danish born Bassist and Cellist Thøger Lund, who moved to Tucson over a decade ago after joining Arizona rock band Giant Sand. Lund performs regularly around town playing many different styles of music including jazz, Latin, rock, and Americana. August 22, 5 – 7 PM Holly Pyle (Standards) Phoenix native Holly Pyle is buzzing the valley and other corners of the US with her latest concoction of disparate music influences. Known as an intuitive vocalist with an ability to inhabit nearly any style of music, Holly started out as an opera major at Northern Arizona University, quickly shifting to complete studies in jazz and psychology. Since diving into a full-time music career in late 2014, Holly has cultivated her own progressive soul-pop sound, releasing two albums and giving over 1000 performances, both locally and throughout the US. In addition to moonlighting with several acts from hip-hop to country to jazz, Holly frequently performs as a solo a-cappella act using electronic looping to sample and recombine her voice into an ever-changing choir of Hollys. Her original psych-soul project House of Stairs released a full-length album in Fall of 2018. She will be fronting a power house jazz ensemble performing familiar and original material. August 29, 5 – 7 PM Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey (Jazz and Blues Duo) International touring artists Diane Van Deurzen & Lisa Otey are a dynamic duo, a perfect blend of hot jazz, sultry blues and boogie-woogie. They take their act to festivals, clubs and theatres around the world and are known for creating an atmosphere of intimacy with their humor and joyful interactions with the audience. Performance Lineup: April 20 Gus Woodrow Trio (Jazz Organ Trio) The Gus Woodrow Trio features Gus Woodrow (guitar), Angelo Versace (organ), and Casey Hadland (drums). Formed in 2016 through mutual gigs, the group has played extensively throughout Arizona. With influences ranging from Wes Montgomery and Thelonious Monk to Kurt Rosenwinkle and Herbie Hancock, the Trio always provide a listening experience that is both soothingly nostalgic and virtuosically enthralling. They perform regularly at Maynard's Kitchen every other Friday, where they bring their signature laid back hard bop atmosphere to their followers. April 27 Cochise County All-Stars (Eclectic Americana) The Cochise County All-Stars started their musical journey nearly 15 years ago as strictly a honky tonk band playing the jukebox country music popular when Route 66 was Main Street USA. A few natural additions and subtractions in personnel have led to an evolved group of seasoned veterans who perform songs they love, regardless of style or genre. A CCAS show could easily feature a Hank Williams tune back to back with an obscure Latin rock instrumental followed by a jazz standard. It all seems to work when you have a group of tasteful musicians who have come together from a variety of backgrounds, both geographically and experientially. May 4 Wally Lawder and the Stragglers (Americana / Folk) Front man Wally Lawder is one of the leading singer-songwriters in the Tucson area, with 6 albums of original music and several songwriting awards under his belt. Wally is known for his rich baritone vocals accompanied by guitar and ukulele. For this show he will be joined by several outstanding musicians—the Stragglers!--who have fine reputations in their own right: Don Armstrong on banjo, Jim Dumbauld on bass, and Jim Lipson on percussion. Together they create a unique, Folk/Americana sound, mellow in feel, upbeat in mood! May 11 Freddy Parish & The Old Town String Band (Country / Old Time) Freddy Parish is a singer/songwriter performing original songs and traditional tunes in a neo-traditional folk and country style. Backed by two-time Arizona State Fiddle Champion Matt Rolland on fiddle and mandolin, along with classically trained multi-instrumentalist Nathan Fenoglio on clawhammer banjo, accordion, guitar and harmony vocals, the trio plays dark Appalachian folk songs, sweet country ballads, and upbeat Cajun and honky tonk shuffles. May 18 Black Cat Bones (Blues Rock) Tucson-based Blues and Rock five piece, Black Cat Bones, is making a name for themselves for their signature mix of classic blues and rock with R&B, featuring smooth vocals and blues jams. The band features Charles Pitts (vocals), Jeff Daniels (bass), Dan Laetsch (drums), Gary David (guitar), Richard Rivera (guitar). Fans of BB King and Johnny Winter will love this band. May 25 Kevin Pakulis & His Band (Blues & Americana) Award-winning Americana singer-songwriter Kevin Pakulis is a master musician and story teller. Emerging in 2004 from Tucson’s deep pool of talented musicians, his award-winning edgy, guitar-driven compositions, delivered with plenty of raw energy, earned him national and international attention with his debut release of Yeah Yeah Yeah. No Depression Magazine put it most succinctly in their review: “His music represents the best of a genre.” Kevin’s songwriting ranges from introspective and reflective to satirical and political, from rocking blues anthems to quiet acoustic pieces. Whatever the message or the sound, the constant is the soulful honesty of the art. Anyone who has ever been to Tucson in the summer cannot help but sing along when they hear the chorus of the title track to Yeah Yeah Yeah: “It’s hot here, hot as hell here, swamp cooler and a cold beer,” a bluesy haiku on the Sonoran Desert summer. Tempered by time and experience, the latest offering, Holliday (Summer, 2018) revisits the themes of life in the Sonoran Desert, love in its many forms, and the nuances of social disparity. Over the years, Pakulis has opened for numerous major acts including Billie Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Dwight Yoakam, Sonny Landreth, John Gorka, Little Feat, and Merle Haggard.
