Best 23 Miles of Mexican Food Tucson is home to the most authentic Mexican north of the border. The highest concentration of these restaurants is found within a 23-mile area that includes the City of South Tucson, Downtown, and lower midtown. At these terrific eateries, many of which are family-owned and decades old, the settings are casual, the ingredients are fresh, and the experience is unforgettable. Native Seed/SEARCH and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance collaborate to create a new culinary series focused on agriculture & culinary traditions of the Three Sisters Join some of Arizona's most esteemed and nationally celebrated chefs for an unforgettable culinary experience that will open your mind and introduce your palate to the possibilities of classic and modern ingredients alike. A unique collaboration between the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) and Native Seeds/SEARCH brings Arizona chefs together for a series of culinary events that highlight the agricultural and culinary practices of the Three Sisters — corn, beans and squash.
Originating in Mexico, the Three Sisters is a traditional planting practice where corn, beans and squash are grown together in the same field: corn is tall and supportive, beans climb with vines and add nitrogen to the soil, and the third sister, squash, sprawls to retain moisture and prevent weeds and pests. Today, Native Seeds/SEARCH preserves many heirloom crop varieties grown using these environmentally sustainable methods and some will make their way into deliciously local dishes at each event. The Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa will host a dinner for the culinary series on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 6 PM. The dinner will feature a progressive five-course dinning experience led by four Arizona chefs, each bringing their signature flair to present the Three Sisters staple ingredients. Executive Chef Todd Sicolo of the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort will be preparing an assortment of appetizers that guests can enjoy as they stroll the beautiful courtyard and foyer of the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort. From there, guests will enter the Sonoran Ballroom where James Beard award-winning Chef Christopher Gross of Christopher's at Wrigley Mansion and Executive Chef Danny Perez from The Gallery Golf Club will be preparing the main courses of the night. To finish off their culinary journey, guests will join Chef Wendy Gauthier of Chef Chic on the moonlit terrace for dessert. Westward Look's commitment to developing and presenting innovative community outreach continues to shine in Southern Arizona. From partnering with SAACA to create Lookout Tucson, a free Thursday night jazz concert series, to opening their own community garden and offering new culinary education opportunities, Westward Look is more than just one of Tucson's resorts—it's a relaxing hub for creative minds. Dinner guests can enjoy an elegant weekend by taking advantage of Westward Look’s mid-summer room rates. The third and final event in this special collaboration with Native Seeds/SEARCH will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:30AM at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon and will feature a sampling-style brunch. "SAACA is dedicated to maximizing our collective impact through meaningful collaborations within our community," explains the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance's Executive Director, Kate Marquez. "We learn from every project and with each collaboration draw deeper understanding of what our shared vision for our community will look like" Proceeds from the Three Sisters Culinary Series will support SAACA's creative arts programming and Native Seeds/SEARCH's efforts to conserve the rich agro-biodiversity of the arid Southwest.
