ORO VALLEY PUBLIC ART ADMINISTRATION SERVICES FOR DEVELOPERS

What is the 1% Oro Valley Public Art Program?
In 1997, the town established a 1% Public Art Program, which requires that commercial developers set aside one percent of a projects total budget for the creation of public art. By passing the public art mandate, Oro Valley signaled an ongoing commitment to create beautiful surroundings that enhance the quality of life for all who live, work and play in the town. Developers and businesses are key to the 1% Public Art program.

The Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance provides low cost project administration services for businesses required to fulfill the 1% for Public Art Commercial Development requirement in Oro Valley, AZ.
Public art is often site-specific, meaning it is created in response to the place and community in which it resides. Though an asset to the community, the development and management of public art can be a complex process. Learn here what public art is, why it is important to a community, how it is developed and created, and view a case study that showcases the positive impact public art can have on a community.

Simply put public art is art in public spaces. The term “public art” may conjure images of historic bronze statues of a soldier on horseback in a park. Today, public art can take a wide range of forms, sizes, and scales—and can be temporary or permanent. It often interprets the history of the place, its people, and perhaps addresses a social or environmental issue. Public art can include murals, sculpture, memorials, integrated architectural or landscape architectural work, community art, digital new media, and even performances and festivals!

Art in public spaces plays a distinguishing role in our country’s history and culture. It reflects and reveals our society, enhances meaning in our civic spaces, and adds uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment. It provides an intersection between past, present, and future between disciplines and ideas. Public art matters because our ommunities gain cultural, social, and economic value through public art.

WHY IS PUBLIC ART IMPORTANT?

Public art instills meaning—a greater sense of identity and understandings of where we live, work, and visit—creating memorable experiences for all. It humanizes the built environment, provides an intersection between past, present, and future, and can help communities thrive.  Public art has been found to provide a positive impact on communities by supporting economic growth and sustainability, attachment and cultural identity, artists as contributors, social cohesion and cultural understanding, and public health and belonging.
