Local artists are invited by the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance and Roche Tissue Diagnostics to create artistic mammography capes for this inspiring art installation (TUCSON, Ariz) Roche Tissue Diagnostics and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance are joining forces with local artists to feature a community-driven art installation of locally designed and fabricated mammography capes. The exhibition, which is open to the public, will raise awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and research. The exhibition titled, “Superheroes, Capes of Strength and Beauty,” and a silent auction, will raise funds for El Rio Health, a community-based health center that provides accessible, affordable, high-quality healthcare to more than 107,000 Tucsonans. This special exhibit opens in October, commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The mammography capes are used in El Rio Health by patients receiving mammograms, which is a low- dose x-ray that allows specialists to look for abnormal changes in breast tissue. The exhibit will feature 75 of these capes that have been altered, embellished, painted, quilted and otherwise re-imagined with no limit on materials or techniques used. The exhibit is designed to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, celebrate survivors and remember those we have lost. Seeking Artists: Roche and SAACA are seeking professional and amateur artists, community organizations and students interested in creating one of these unique art pieces. Suggested themes include superheroes, empowerment, survivorship and fashion/glamour. Transformed capes should take this practical garment and elevate it to represent the strength and stories of survivors and those fighting breast cancer. Amateur and established artists of all ages are invited to participate in the exhibition. To learn more and be provided with a complimentary cape to design, apply online at: https://saaca.formstack.com/forms/2019_roche_superheroes_capes_of_strength_and_beauty. All participants will be acknowledged in the exhibition program, and with an identifying placard onsite. About the Fundraiser: Roche will host a silent auction accompanying the opening of the exhibit on October 17, 2019. All displayed capes will have a starting bid of $100, with 100 percent of all funds raised to support El Rio Health Center Foundation’s breast cancer mammography fund for uninsured and underinsured patients. Select pieces will be chosen for display in El Rio Radiology Departments. Unsold pieces will be auctioned by El Rio or gifted to El Rio’s patients who are breast cancer survivors. Purchased capes will remain on display through the end of the exhibition. Opening Reception An opening reception will be held on October 17, 2019 at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, 1910 E. Innovation Park Drive, from 5pm to 7 p.m. First, second and third place winners will be awarded by an external jury of judges. Reception attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces and artists will be recognized with various awards at a ceremony. Ventana Gallery’s next exhibition Uncommon Beauty: Pathology and other microscopic wonders and realities in nature, showcases a unique collaboration between pathologist Marilyn Bui of The Moffitt Cancer Center and her patient, artist Raymond Paul, both from Tampa, FL. When Ray was first diagnosed with sarcoma in 2011, he expressed a desire to truly see what his disease looked like. Dr. Bui invited Paul to view his tumor through a double-headed microscope and provided him with digital images which would become his inspiration for a series of large-scale abstract paintings. Ray describes his work as “a visual manifestation of the battle raging within, and a powerful testament to the beauty of hope.” For Dr. Bui this collaboration precipitated her co-editing the book The Healing Art of Pathology, by College of American Pathologists (CAP) Press, a collection of artwork and essays derived or inspired by pathology. The book gives a beautiful voice to pathologists and their often quiet, but important connection to the patients they diagnose. Uncommon Beauty will highlight a selection of Ray’s work alongside a selection of work by pathologist and mixed media artist Mary Lachman. The exhibit will also feature local community artists displaying submissions that further investigate the theme of finding beauty in unexpected places. Artist Susan Norton combines elements of her own medical scans into inspiring glimpses of the beauty that lies between the worlds of medicine and biology. Roche Tissue Diagnostics employee and artist Scott Taft creates images of polarized crystals on microscopic slides, which he describes as “like visiting another world.” Each artist on view truly celebrates these moments of unique discoveries, and the sense of wonder that comes from looking intently at the often overlooked. Uncommon Beauty will be on display April 12 - July 9, 2019 at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, 1910 E. Innovation Park Drive. A public opening reception for the exhibit will be held April 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Ventana Gallery is open to the public by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call SAACA at (520) 333-4087. In the first quarter of 2019, the Ventana Gallery will host - Healing, Inspiration, and Art: An exhibition highlighting how grief can inspire creative expression. The exhibit showcases work from over 35 different artists encompassing multiple mediums, including photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and more. This diverse assortment of work finds common inspiration in exploring the relationship between creative arts practice and the emotions of trauma, loss and grief. The exhibit offers a meditation on what it means for artists to delve into the shadows of what hurts, disturbs and stultifies and offer something back that reveals, transforms and restores. Healing, Inspiration, and Art shares an impressive body of work alongside deeply felt and personal stories. Diane Haug, who will be exhibiting a selection of her paintings spoke to their creation saying, “My grown son was killed by a car last year. Since that time most of my paintings have exhibited climbing out or stairs leading somewhere. They aren't typically depressing but I felt my son in each one. I am happy to say that I am now painting sunny paintings again, but these five paintings are all part of my emotional climb.” Another artist Karen Samson will be exhibiting work created surrounding her cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her pieces show an arc of emotions with some pieces such as Acceptance, with its impulsive wildness, reflecting a darker reaction to the imposing medical regiment, to another piece like The Jewel which strikes a brighter note, expressing hopefulness. Healing, Inspiration, and Art will be on display from January 11th – April 9th, 2019 at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, 1910 E. Large Art Exhibition Highlights Roche Tissue Diagnostics' Commitment to Creative Expression7/12/2018
Exhibition is opportunity for employee and public connections through the arts. Roche Tissue Diagnostics (RTD)is an innovator of tissue-based diagnostic solutions for patience worldwide. They also committed to the arts, and through their relationship with the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA), have made art a part of the daily work experience through quarterly gallery exhibitions at their Ventana gallery.
On Thursday, July 19, 2018 RTD and SAACA will host the third quarter opening of the largest employer-sponsored art exhibition in Southern Arizona. You’ll have an opportunity to view the work of those who work at RTD along with art from their immediate family members, youth and adult. This year is a record year, with 114 pieces of art. The work encompasses multiple categories, including photography, drawing, painting, fiber, metal & glass, sculpture and much more. Among this year’s highlights are a special two and three-dimensional category for “PathArt.” PathArt can be any art or image related to anatomic pathology, hand-made or photographed through the microscope. For some, the annual RTD Campus Exhibition is an opportunity to connect through art with coworkers and the public. For others, the show is a temporary distraction from the rigors of their career at a company whose mission is to improve the lives of all patients afflicted with cancer. No matter the perspective, the exhibition serves as an annual highlight to many of the creative members of the RTD community. "When I was interviewed on the Oro Valley campus in 2013, what I remember most is walking through the hallways, which were covered in art. I remember thinking to myself, ‘A company that values both art and science is a place I want to work!’ Now I have the opportunity to work with SAACA throughout the year to plan each of our quarterly art exhibitions. My favorite, of course, is the RTD Campus Exhibition, which allows colleagues and their families to engage with each other, and the public, in unexpected ways, said Darlene Buhrow, Senior Communications Manager, RTD. The reception will be held on July 19, 2018 at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, 1910 E. Innovation Park Dr., from 5 to 7 p.m. First, second and third place winners will be awarded by an external jury. Reception attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for People's Choice Awards.
