Fine Artists and Live Demos set to enchant one of Tucson’s most exquisite outdoor shopping centers

1/7/2019

"Watercolors became my preferred medium because I traveled so much as a scientist. I could easily fit them on an airplane in my backpack," explains local water color artist, Margarethe Brummermann.

Born and raised in Dortmund, Germany, Brummermann developed her passion for painting hand in hand with her career in biology. She worked as a researcher and teacher at universities and field stations across Europe and the United States while also dedicating time to her artistic studies at the Academy for Photography and Design in Dortmund and eventually the Scottsdale Artists School.

"I often use my paintings as backdrops for my PowerPoint slides. I hope to make my scientific topics beautiful and thus more approachable," says Brummermann.

In 2002, she settled in the pristine deserts of the Tucson Mountains now working for Sky Island in the field of diversity research in SE AZ and Sonora Mexico. Brummermann was immediately inspired by her new home and the unique and unexpected community of welcoming creative minds she found here.

Margarethe Brummermann will be one of over 50 of Southern Arizona’s finest artists that will be filling the pristine garden courtyards at the annual La Encantada Fine Art Festival on Saturday, January 19 from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday, January 20 from 11 AM to 4 PM. Nestled at the base of the breath-taking Catalina Mountains, this iconic festival will once again bring together a collection of the region’s finest artists to meet and sell directly with the communities that support them at La Encantada shopping center, 2905 E. Skyline Dr

In addition to Brummermann’s paintings, festival attendees can expect to see a variety of artistic mediums ranging from handcrafted metalwork and pottery to delicately stitched clothing and home décor.

New to this year’s festival, attendees can partake in a series of Live Educational Art Demos throughout both days of the event. Demonstrations include scratchboard art from Paul Hopman, clay wheel throwing from Hirotsune Tashima, weaving from the Visual and Textile Arts of Tucson, tapestry-style mosaic with Andrea Edmundson and many others.

A panel of judges will award top marks for Best In Show Overall, Best In Show 2D, and Best in Show 3D.

La Encantada Fine Art Festival Returns January 20 & 21, 2018

Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance will draw some of the region’s finest artisans to one of the area’s most beautiful shopping centers
“My works are impressionistic abstract paintings. I mostly paint with acrylics. I also enjoy playing with digital art and water colors,” artist Kume Bryant stated.

A self-taught painter, Kume is a Tucsonan who will be a first-time participant, showcasing her artwork during the La Encantada Fine Art Festival, Saturday, January 20 from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday, January 20 from 11 AM to 4 PM. The festival will bring more than 50 artists together to exhibit their finest works along the outdoor courtyards and gardens of La Encantada shopping center, 2905 E. Skyline Drive.

After working as a graphic artist following college, Kume’s husband encouraged her to follow her dream of becoming a painter. “I am honored to say that I have sold to collectors worldwide. It is amazing to me that my works hangs in homes, churches, and businesses across the globe.”

“Feeling blessed and excited about life, I am always aiming to spread positivity with uplifting subjects and colors to brighten the world,” she said. “Painting from my heart. Capturing the heart happy moments.”

Among other artists that will be sharing their work at the fine art festival, is Sam Mayhob – or "Sam the Copperman." Sam’s pieces are copper art made with heat and are created as interior décor. Each is a completely one-of-a-kind piece.

“I make an assortment of copper artwork simply through flame-work using my torch like a brush on large metal sheets,” says Sam. “As a vendor, the La Encantada festival is a wonderful experience for me to show my artwork to the many great people of Tucson.”

From pottery and ceramics to glass and jewelry, the La Encantada Fine Arts Festival presented by Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, will feature some of the most impressive artists in the region. The garden-setting of the shopping center will provide a beautiful setting for shopping and buying local, original artwork.

The festival provides an opportunity for local artisans to exhibit and showcase their art to the community among the breathtaking views of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
