Performance Lineup: April 20 Gus Woodrow Trio (Jazz Organ Trio) The Gus Woodrow Trio features Gus Woodrow (guitar), Angelo Versace (organ), and Casey Hadland (drums). Formed in 2016 through mutual gigs, the group has played extensively throughout Arizona. With influences ranging from Wes Montgomery and Thelonious Monk to Kurt Rosenwinkle and Herbie Hancock, the Trio always provide a listening experience that is both soothingly nostalgic and virtuosically enthralling. They perform regularly at Maynard's Kitchen every other Friday, where they bring their signature laid back hard bop atmosphere to their followers. April 27 Cochise County All-Stars (Eclectic Americana) The Cochise County All-Stars started their musical journey nearly 15 years ago as strictly a honky tonk band playing the jukebox country music popular when Route 66 was Main Street USA. A few natural additions and subtractions in personnel have led to an evolved group of seasoned veterans who perform songs they love, regardless of style or genre. A CCAS show could easily feature a Hank Williams tune back to back with an obscure Latin rock instrumental followed by a jazz standard. It all seems to work when you have a group of tasteful musicians who have come together from a variety of backgrounds, both geographically and experientially. May 4 Wally Lawder and the Stragglers (Americana / Folk) Front man Wally Lawder is one of the leading singer-songwriters in the Tucson area, with 6 albums of original music and several songwriting awards under his belt. Wally is known for his rich baritone vocals accompanied by guitar and ukulele. For this show he will be joined by several outstanding musicians—the Stragglers!--who have fine reputations in their own right: Don Armstrong on banjo, Jim Dumbauld on bass, and Jim Lipson on percussion. Together they create a unique, Folk/Americana sound, mellow in feel, upbeat in mood! May 11 Freddy Parish & The Old Town String Band (Country / Old Time) Freddy Parish is a singer/songwriter performing original songs and traditional tunes in a neo-traditional folk and country style. Backed by two-time Arizona State Fiddle Champion Matt Rolland on fiddle and mandolin, along with classically trained multi-instrumentalist Nathan Fenoglio on clawhammer banjo, accordion, guitar and harmony vocals, the trio plays dark Appalachian folk songs, sweet country ballads, and upbeat Cajun and honky tonk shuffles. May 18 Black Cat Bones (Blues Rock) Tucson-based Blues and Rock five piece, Black Cat Bones, is making a name for themselves for their signature mix of classic blues and rock with R&B, featuring smooth vocals and blues jams. The band features Charles Pitts (vocals), Jeff Daniels (bass), Dan Laetsch (drums), Gary David (guitar), Richard Rivera (guitar). Fans of BB King and Johnny Winter will love this band. May 25 Kevin Pakulis & His Band (Blues & Americana) Award-winning Americana singer-songwriter Kevin Pakulis is a master musician and story teller. Emerging in 2004 from Tucson’s deep pool of talented musicians, his award-winning edgy, guitar-driven compositions, delivered with plenty of raw energy, earned him national and international attention with his debut release of Yeah Yeah Yeah. No Depression Magazine put it most succinctly in their review: “His music represents the best of a genre.” Kevin’s songwriting ranges from introspective and reflective to satirical and political, from rocking blues anthems to quiet acoustic pieces. Whatever the message or the sound, the constant is the soulful honesty of the art. Anyone who has ever been to Tucson in the summer cannot help but sing along when they hear the chorus of the title track to Yeah Yeah Yeah: “It’s hot here, hot as hell here, swamp cooler and a cold beer,” a bluesy haiku on the Sonoran Desert summer. Tempered by time and experience, the latest offering, Holliday (Summer, 2018) revisits the themes of life in the Sonoran Desert, love in its many forms, and the nuances of social disparity. Over the years, Pakulis has opened for numerous major acts including Billie Joe Shaver, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Dwight Yoakam, Sonny Landreth, John Gorka, Little Feat, and Merle Haggard. Roche Tissue Diagnostics Community Gallery - Uncommon Beauty: Pathology and other microscopic wonders and realities in nature Roche Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) is an innovator of cancer diagnostics for patients worldwide. The company is also committed to the arts, and through their relationship with the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA), have made art a part of the daily work experience through quarterly gallery exhibitions at their Ventana Gallery.
Ventana Gallery’s next exhibition Uncommon Beauty: Pathology and other microscopic wonders and realities in nature, showcases a unique collaboration between pathologist Marilyn Bui of The Moffitt Cancer Center and her patient, artist Raymond Paul, both from Tampa, FL. When Ray was first diagnosed with sarcoma in 2011, he expressed a desire to truly see what his disease looked like. Dr. Bui invited Paul to view his tumor through a double-headed microscope and provided him with digital images which would become his inspiration for a series of large-scale abstract paintings. Ray describes his work as “a visual manifestation of the battle raging within, and a powerful testament to the beauty of hope.” For Dr. Bui this collaboration precipitated her co-editing the book The Healing Art of Pathology, by College of American Pathologists (CAP) Press, a collection of artwork and essays derived or inspired by pathology. The book gives a beautiful voice to pathologists and their often quiet, but important connection to the patients they diagnose. Uncommon Beauty will highlight a selection of Ray’s work alongside a selection of work by pathologist and mixed media artist Mary Lachman. The exhibit will also feature local community artists displaying submissions that further investigate the theme of finding beauty in unexpected places. Artist Susan Norton combines elements of her own medical scans into inspiring glimpses of the beauty that lies between the worlds of medicine and biology. Roche Tissue Diagnostics employee and artist Scott Taft creates images of polarized crystals on microscopic slides, which he describes as “like visiting another world.” Each artist on view truly celebrates these moments of unique discoveries, and the sense of wonder that comes from looking intently at the often overlooked. Uncommon Beauty will be on display April 12 - July 9, 2019 at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, 1910 E. Innovation Park Drive. A public opening reception for the exhibit will be held April 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Ventana Gallery is open to the public by appointment, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call SAACA at (520) 333-4087.
