Native Seed/SEARCH and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance collaborate to create a new culinary series focused on agriculture & culinary traditions of the Three Sisters Join some of Arizona's most esteemed and nationally celebrated chefs for an unforgettable culinary experience that will open your mind and introduce your palate to the possibilities of classic and modern ingredients alike. A unique collaboration between the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) and Native Seeds/SEARCH brings Arizona chefs together for a series of culinary events that highlight the agricultural and culinary practices of the Three Sisters — corn, beans and squash.
Originating in Mexico, the Three Sisters is a traditional planting practice where corn, beans and squash are grown together in the same field: corn is tall and supportive, beans climb with vines and add nitrogen to the soil, and the third sister, squash, sprawls to retain moisture and prevent weeds and pests. Today, Native Seeds/SEARCH preserves many heirloom crop varieties grown using these environmentally sustainable methods and some will make their way into deliciously local dishes at each event. The Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa will host a dinner for the culinary series on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 6 PM. The dinner will feature a progressive five-course dinning experience led by four Arizona chefs, each bringing their signature flair to present the Three Sisters staple ingredients. Executive Chef Todd Sicolo of the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort will be preparing an assortment of appetizers that guests can enjoy as they stroll the beautiful courtyard and foyer of the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort. From there, guests will enter the Sonoran Ballroom where James Beard award-winning Chef Christopher Gross of Christopher's at Wrigley Mansion and Executive Chef Danny Perez from The Gallery Golf Club will be preparing the main courses of the night. To finish off their culinary journey, guests will join Chef Wendy Gauthier of Chef Chic on the moonlit terrace for dessert. Westward Look's commitment to developing and presenting innovative community outreach continues to shine in Southern Arizona. From partnering with SAACA to create Lookout Tucson, a free Thursday night jazz concert series, to opening their own community garden and offering new culinary education opportunities, Westward Look is more than just one of Tucson's resorts—it's a relaxing hub for creative minds. Dinner guests can enjoy an elegant weekend by taking advantage of Westward Look’s mid-summer room rates. The third and final event in this special collaboration with Native Seeds/SEARCH will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:30AM at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon and will feature a sampling-style brunch. "SAACA is dedicated to maximizing our collective impact through meaningful collaborations within our community," explains the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance's Executive Director, Kate Marquez. "We learn from every project and with each collaboration draw deeper understanding of what our shared vision for our community will look like" Proceeds from the Three Sisters Culinary Series will support SAACA's creative arts programming and Native Seeds/SEARCH's efforts to conserve the rich agro-biodiversity of the arid Southwest. Tucson Premium Outlets and Southern Arts & Cultural Alliance continue their creative collaboration that brings free, weekly music to Tucson. Don't miss some of Southern Arizona's finest local musicians at Tucson Premium Outlets this Spring and Fall. A creative collaboration between Tucson Premium Outlets and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, the family-friendly concerts bring opportunities for local musicians to showcase their talents to the community.
The popular free concert series, held every Saturday evening April 20 – May 25 and then September 7 – December 28, will feature a variety of weekly performances from local musicians and bands. The concerts will be held each Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Mountain Court at Tucson Premium Outlets. Coupled with delicious food from Market Hall and over 60 stores offering extraordinary savings, the evenings provide the perfect outing for the whole family. "Events like these are exactly what Mountain Court was designed for, and we are thrilled to welcome families out to gather and enjoy the space as it gets cooler in the evenings." said Amy Lee, Director of Marketing and Business Development with Tucson Premium Outlets. "We have an excellent lineup of performers that we can't wait for our shoppers to enjoy." The concerts are a creative collaboration between Tucson Premium Outlets and the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, bringing opportunities for local musicians to showcase their talents to the community, and new arts and business partnerships in new and innovative ways. Performance Lineup: April 20 Gus Woodrow Trio (Jazz Organ Trio) The Gus Woodrow Trio features Gus Woodrow (guitar), Angelo Versace (organ), and Casey Hadland (drums). Formed in 2016 through mutual gigs, the group has played extensively throughout Arizona. With influences ranging from Wes Montgomery and Thelonious Monk to Kurt Rosenwinkle and Herbie Hancock, the Trio always provide a listening experience that is both soothingly nostalgic and virtuosically enthralling. They perform regularly at Maynard's Kitchen every other Friday, where they bring their signature laid back hard bop atmosphere to their followers. April 27 Cochise County All-Stars (Eclectic Americana) The Cochise County All-Stars started their musical journey nearly 15 years ago as strictly a honky tonk band playing the jukebox country music popular when Route 66 was Main Street USA. A few natural additions and subtractions in personnel have led to an evolved group of seasoned veterans who perform songs they love, regardless of style or genre. A CCAS show could easily feature a Hank Williams tune back to back with an obscure Latin rock instrumental followed by a jazz standard. It all seems to work when you have a group of tasteful musicians who have come together from a variety of backgrounds, both geographically and experientially. May 4 Wally Lawder and the Stragglers (Americana / Folk) Front man Wally Lawder is one of the leading singer-songwriters in the Tucson area, with 6 albums of original music and several songwriting awards under his belt. Wally is known for his rich baritone vocals accompanied by guitar and ukulele. For this show he will be joined by several outstanding musicians—the Stragglers!--who have fine reputations in their own right: Don Armstrong on banjo, Jim Dumbauld on bass, and Jim Lipson on percussion. Together they create a unique, Folk/Americana sound, mellow in feel, upbeat in mood! May 11 Freddy Parish & The Old Town String Band (Country / Old Time) Freddy Parish is a singer/songwriter performing original songs and traditional tunes in a neo-traditional folk and country style. Backed by two-time Arizona State Fiddle Champion Matt Rolland on fiddle and mandolin, along with classically trained multi-instrumentalist Nathan Fenoglio on clawhammer banjo, accordion, guitar and harmony vocals, the trio plays dark Appalachian folk songs, sweet country ballads, and upbeat Cajun and honky tonk shuffles. May 18 Black Cat Bones (Blues Rock) Tucson-based Blues and Rock five piece, Black Cat Bones, is making a name for themselves for their signature mix of classic blues and rock with R&B, featuring smooth vocals and blues jams. The band features Charles Pitts (vocals), Jeff Daniels (bass), Dan Laetsch (drums), Gary David (guitar), Richard Rivera (guitar). Fans of BB King and Johnny Winter will love this band. May 25 Kevin Pakulis & His Band (Blues & Americana) Award-winning Americana singer-songwriter Kevin Pakulis is a master musician and story teller. Emerging in 2004 from Tucson’s deep pool of talented musicians, his award-winning edgy, guitar-driven compositions, delivered with plenty of raw energy, earned him national and international attention with his debut release of Yeah Yeah Yeah. No Depression Magazine put it most succinctly in their review: “His music represents the best of a genre.” Kevin’s songwriting ranges from introspective and reflective to satirical and political, from rocking blues anthems to quiet acoustic pieces. Whatever the message or the sound, the constant is the soulful honesty of the art. Anyone who has ever been to Tucson in the summer cannot help but sing along when they hear the chorus of the title track to Yeah Yeah Yeah: “It’s hot here, hot as hell here, swamp cooler and a cold beer,” a bluesy haiku on the Sonoran Desert summer. Tempered by time and experience, the latest offering, Holliday (Summer, 2018) revisits the themes of life in the Sonoran Desert, love in its many forms, and the nuances of social disparity.
